 "Absolute garbage" 2009-08-28
By Robert P. Brodner Jr. (Frisco, TX United States)
We finally broke down and bought a new knife set and settled on this one due to the look and Kitchenaid reputation. Boy are we sorry. We've had this set for a little over a year and 2 of the table knives broke. The blade just snapped in half. Not from abuse, just having a dish get laid on top of them in the sink. Avoid these at all cost.

"RUST BUCKET! Looked good, cuts well." 2009-08-01
By Michael
I have had this set for at least 3 years now. The set looks good and cuts well. All the knives started showing rust spots shortly after purchase. Now the rusting is all over. I wouldn't want to put these rusted knives on any of my food. I had a stainless Cuisinart set previously, but wanted the black block look in our new kitchen. The Cuisinart set had no rust issue... I should have kept it! This would be a great set and I wold rate it a five star if not for the rusting which make them unusable; unless you don't mind getting a tetnus shot when your done eating!

"Looks great, but doesn't hold up" 2009-06-01
By S. Cullen
We bought this set because of the look and Kitchenaid name. Unfortunately, after only a couple weeks these knives had rust spots all over them. This was only with normal use and hand washing. No problem with the way they cut, but if you purchase them expect to have a set of rusty knives.

"very well made high carbon stainless for this price cannot be beat" 2009-05-20
By beerorkid (NE)
My wife got me this set for christmas a couple years back and I absolutely love them. If you do the research you would know there are 3 kinds of materials used for most knives. Carbon steel which is soft, cheap, does not hold a sharp edge for long, and rusts. Stainless steel which is hard and keeps a sharp edge for a while but, is really hard to sharpen. The best of both is high carbon stainless steel which gives you the best of both worlds, which is what this set is made of.

The 3 big knifes are amazing. The spine (back edge) is rounded for comfort. The bolster (where the blade meets the handle) is rounded and extremely comfortable to use for long periods. Also the bolster / heel design eliminates the chance of cutting yourself from a sharp edge at the base of the blade. The balance is really good as well. These are really comfortable knives to use for extended periods of time. If you do not know knife skills please look them up and use a pinch grip for slicing and chopping. These knives are almost ergonomic for the pinch grip. I second guessed the quality of this set I got as a gift till I saw how much thought was put into the design and researched the materials used. These are my best knives I own and I use them daily with pride.

If you use your knives daily you will need to care for them. Cut on only plastic or wood, hone with the sharpening steel every couple of uses (more on that below), and keep it sharp by a professional or sharpen them on your own. Never put a quality knife like this in the dishwasher. When you are done with it rinse it and wash if needed, hand dry and place back in the block. Not only will it keep your knives in their best shape but it is a basic safety measure. Dishwashers destroy sharp knives. Not only do the detergents damage the edge, but the heat can weaken the temper of the edge since it is so thin. The carbon content of these knives will rust if not properly taken care of. This is not pure stainless, this is a professional set of high quality knives. This might seem rude, but if you cannot take proper care of your knives you do not deserve this set.

The sharpening steel is a name that suggests it actually sharpens, it does not. It should be called a honing steel. What it does is straighten out the edge to correct any rolling of the edge that has happened after use. The steel included is very good and magnetized to collect burs that might be removed during honing.

I have had these knives professionally sharpened and then started sharpening them myself. They hold an edge very well and the quality of the metal shines through. I do not know of another set that has so many great design qualities and is made of such fine materials for the price. I would recommend these to anyone and buy them as gifts if only my friends cooked at home as much as I do.

My only complaints are:

- the scissors are not as strong as I would like. I replaced them with a more robust pair

- the steak knives are a bit blunt and not too sharp. I used a sharpening stone to sharpen them to my liking. I understand why they came that way though.

- the serrated knife is a bit small and hard to work with. I would of liked a bigger and better designed serrated / bread knife.

Still not enough to dock a star for the price point.

"should "stainless" steel rust this much??" 2009-04-23
By Diane Kwak (Northern NJ)
before purchasing, i read the reviews and noted that i should hand wash these knives... and i've been doing just that and placing wet knives in my dishrack to air dry. maybe that's where i went wrong (i should have towel dried them as well?), but the knives still rusted, and that is NOT making me happy. i have another knife that looks just like these, made by Cuisinart, that DOES NOT rust, even when washed in the dishwasher. i'm wondering why these rust so much. isn't "stainless steel" supposed to resist rust?

other than the rusting issue, the knives are very good. they are incredibly sharp. however, with the rusting issue, i wish i could return them...
