I research everything before I buy and love to find a great value.

That's what these are: big bang-for-the-buck.

Cooking is a passion for me so I have no problem with hand-washing my tools. I even braved the sharpener and found that it works very well and is easier than I anticipated.

 "Good knives." 2008-08-26
By vocalease (California)
These are attractive, solid knives that are well balanced and come with a well made storage block, but you must have a good sharpener for them to cut well. The sharpening steel that comes with the set does not work well, so I purchased the Accusharp for $10 from Amazon and it's made all the difference. If you purchase this knife set buy the sharpener for an extra $10. It's well worth the investment for knives that will last a lifetime if cared for properly.

 "A nice set!" 2007-02-13
By F. Frost (Colorado Springs, CO United States)
I received this set today and immediately 'tested' them on every piece of food in the kitchen! They are lovely! I was prepared for the absence of the bread knife after having read the other reviews, so I wasn't too disappointed.(Although that would be a real bonus to have actually included it in the set.) I also miss having instructions for the 8" 'stone'. Very nice to have but what do you do with it? I remember the males in my family having to develop this skill and that one could ruin a knife by doing it wrong. So I'll scout around for instructions and hope they show up before the knives need sharpening. Other than that they are a pleasure and terrific at this price! I'm glad to have them.

I have owned this set for 5 years now. I have never had any problems. No rust, no stains, no chips and when they get dull, a quick swipe with the sharpening steel sharpens them right back up!! I am telling you, I used to sell Henckels knives and personally I think Henckels is over-rated! Buy these knives, you wont be disappointed!!

"Very Nice Knife Set - Recommended" 2009-09-20
By CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA)
We have used the Chicago Cutlery Insignia Matte 12-Piece Block Set for about three years. This set has held up well and has been fairly easy to maintain, as the knives keep their edges for a long time. They do have to be hand washed after each use, but that is to be expected with this type of good quality cutlery.

The set includes a 3.5" paring knife, 5" utility knife, 8" bread knife, 8" chef knife, 8" sharpening steel, six 4.5" steak knives, and a hardwood block.

We are very pleased with this set, Recommended!

"A good "starter" knife set" 2008-06-27
By Max's Mom (In Blue Heaven, USA)
I bought these knives because they were one the great Friday sales that Amazon has and we didn't register for a set of knives when we got married. They looked sturdy and like "grown-up" knives. We have put these knives through the ringer; we've had them for 2 years and they haven't needed to be sharpened (a sharpener comes with the set). I would recommend this set as starter knifes. They're not J.A. Henckels or Wusthof but they serve their purpose.

"Sharp, functional knives--worth more than their price ($)" 2006-11-09
By TashNYC (Jersey City, NJ United States)
These knives are quite sharp--certainly sharper than the set we replaced--and work well for everyday use. I didn't love the wood block (which is ligher than our previous set) and I missed the bread knife (which, as any discerning reader can tell, is NOT included here), so we simply used our old knife block, and old bread knife, too. (How sharp does a bread knife need to be?) These are highly-functional, save us lots of prep time, and are worth more than the super-discount price paid (low thirties). Enough for me to forgive the silver styling and ligher balance of the knives, when compared to more expensive brands. Still very glad we bought these!

 "Great Value" 2009-09-06
By PSach (South)
I decided to get this set from Amazon after I saw them individually at Walmart. I previously had used Wusthof and Henckels knives. Wusthof knives are about the best mid priced knives I've used - well balanced, lightweight and sharp. Henckels (Twin Cuisine) are too large and heavy and although sharp they have a weird feeling when using them in my opinion. These Chicago Cutlery Forum knives are well made, balanced, lightweight, hold their edge and fit my hands perfectly. Futhermore, you get a whole set for the price of one Wusthof or Henckels Chef's Knife. I have no problem with them staining or rusting. I wipe them (with a solution of Tide With Bleach Laundry Detergent believe it or not) and rinse and dry them after each use. I never use the Sharpening Steel because you can actually dull your knives if you don't know exactly what you're doing; I use an inexpensive manual knife sharpener that I purchased at Walmart when I feel the knives starting to lose their edge.

Finally, the wood block is well made and of a good quality wood and a nice light clean color.

This set will look especially good in a kitchen with black and/or stainless motifs.

"Replaced old Chicago Cutlery set" 2009-01-01
By S. Kelley (Tucson, AZ)
I purchased this set over a year ago to replace my 25 year old Chicago Cutlery set. I tested each knife with the corresponding knife from the old set. I could not tell the difference. I gave my old set to a young couple who were making due with misc. cheap(er) knives. They love them.

I purchased a paring knife in this style from Walmart to try it out before I purchased this set. I did notice staining on the knife but it worked so well I purchased the whole set from Amazon. Curiously, none of the new knives have stained. They all look like new.

I don't cook a lot but use at least one knife a day. I am still well satisfied with these knives.

 "EXTREMELY disappointed" 2007-10-16
By S. Tunney (Lockport, IL)
I've owned a set of Chicago Cutlery for 16 years (a wedding gift). They have served us very well. I decided the set needed replacing, not because the blades are bad, but because the wooden handles have dulled, and a couple have cracked. I purchased this set of Forum knives at Walmart, thinking I got a great deal. I mean, it's Chicago Cutlery. They make (made) great knives. They were sharp and beautiful out of the box. But now, it's only been two weeks, and the large chopping knife got some kind of foggy looking stains on it, and rust marks. One of the steak knives did also. I used soft scrub and even steel wool to try to buff it out, to no avail. Please note: I NEVER wash my knives in the dishwasher, always by hand. Needless to say, I'm returning them today and looking for a replacement brand. Shame on Chicago Cutlery!

"Not so hot.. You can do better for the same price" 2008-11-01
By Benjamin Holt
I bought these knives when the set was on special for $60 instead of the usual $100. While they look great, the pros of this knife set end about there.

They don't hold their sharpness very long and require constant sharpening to maintain a useable edge. That in itself is a rather minor complaint, but it gets much worse. These knives rust VERY easily. If you leave them in the sink for even a day, rust spots will appear. Normally this isn't a problem since you can just clean it off, but where the rust appears, the metal quickly weakens. In less than 8 months I've had 3 of the steak knives acquire CRACKS in the metal at the base, and one of the cutting knives chipped off a 3mm area of the cutting blade while being sharpened.

The only reason I've given this set 3 stars is because Chicago, after much argument, was willing to send me replacement knives at no cost. Otherwise, this set would be a flat 1.

Long story short, for $100, way not worth it.. you can do far better for the same price with other higher rated sets on Amazon. For $50 this set would be worth it.

 "Rusting!" 2008-04-24
By OS (Silver Spring, MD)
I bought this set from Bed Bath and Beyond. We used several knives, hand washed them and let them dry overnight on a rack in the sink. One knife had a large rusty stain on it in the next morning! My wife and I could not believe it. It would not happen even to one of our dollar store knives! So much for the steel made in China! We were able to return the set and bought Henckels from Amazon and have been satisfied with them. I made sure, the set is made of German steel in Germany.

"Incredible Knives for the Price" 2007-02-01
By J. Vallager
First off, I've worked in kitchens for about eight years. All high end restaurants, so I understand what makes for high quality cutlery. For work I have a set of Wusthof Triton blades, you won't find many better knives than that. But at home I have this Insignia set because I would never trust my roommate or girlfriend with a $150 Wusthof knife. Having this set has paid off immensely.

I always wash a knife by hand, just common sense. True their stainless steel, but stainless can still rust. Some of these knives have unfortunately been through the dishwasher a couple of times and have come out just fine; I have never had any problem with rust.

The balance of these knives is superb. And the quality of the steel is very good. These knives will keep a sharp edge for weeks, and I use them daily.

People complain that they're not that sharp, but what they don't realize is you can't just run the steel over them to hone them. You have to keep the knife at low angle and maintain that with every stroke. If you know how to hone a knife, these will come very close to a brand new professional blade.

I would easily recommend these knives to anyone looking to spend $100 to $200 for a set. I have seen much cheaper quality sets for more money. This definitely is a great buy for the money.

 "Ok, but not great" 2007-01-05
By V. Lea (Hawkeye Land)
I know others had problems with rust spots - I haven't had ANY issues like that. I think if you hand wash after use you will be fine. They definitely aren't for the dishwasher.

My only complaint is that they arrived dull. Yes, there is a sharpener, I received two in fact, but still, having to sharpen all the knives (not the steak ones obviously) took a bit of the newness out of the situation, and made it work.

Otherwise, they are great, and after a lot of time spent for the initial sharpen I haven't had a problem. They are nicely balanced, and look very nice on my countertop.

This is the first set of knives I've ever bought. To me, well worth the money. Sharp and nice to look at. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT WASH THESE IN THE DISHWASHER. These knives had a nice walnut color to them new, but after being washed in the dishwasher (only once or twice) they turned to a very bland almost white color. I read a review similar to this before and didn't listen, I am now wishing I did.

"Best knives I've ever owned" 2006-09-30
By William L. Mckenzie (Tucson, AZ)
These knives stay sharp! The ONLY negative is that when I received this block set, there are 11 knives and 12 slots in the block. If you look closely at the photo, you will see that there are two slots directly below the top two slots, and one of them is for the bread knife. I wound up purchaing a seperate fillet knife to fill in the empty slot in my block. Very nice looking set, top-notch quality. Perhaps the extra slot is by design so if you're missing a knife you really want, you can purchase it seperately and have room in your block for it.

 "great affordable set" 2006-06-04
By A. Stevens (New York)
I did my research to find the best knives i could at the lowest price possible. I love cooking and can't stand working with cheap, bad knives, but couldn't afford the top of the range set.

After much searching i decided on this 12 piece set by chicago. They were certainly a good choice.

They are easy to work with, nice sharp blade, cuts through everything easily. So far no sign of rusting.

The only one complaint i have is that one of the knives arrived a little damaged .The tip of the knive is a little bent. I have not got round to sending it back yet but hopefully i will get a replacement no problem.

If you want to get a great set of knives at an affordable price then these are the knives for you.

 "Cutlery Block" 2009-01-23
By D. Vuong
I ordered it on December 13th and I received it December 23rd with the Free Shipping. I needed a daily use block set because I love to cook and I wanted a eye-appealing since it was going to be sitting on the counter of my kitchen. The Block was nicely built and had a in-block sharpener which is fantastic. Each knife was sharp and felt heavy in the hand, which made it feel more stable. They were stainless steel and had a aerodynamic design which was very eye-pleasing especially in my stainless steel kitchen. The steak knives were not serrated, but cut easily into meat. The cheese set and mezzaluna were great bonuses along with the block set. They are not made with the same quality as the knife set so don't expect it. The cheese set is nice with wooden handles, and the mezzaluna is very sharp with plastic handle.

With the Omaha Steak Offer. As I recall it was a 3-Option deal. They would have either a chicken and burgers option, an steak and dessert option, or chicken and fish option. Don't quote me on that, it's just from memory. I found the offer under Special Offers on the page, but I'm sure you could search for it on amazon's website. You would need the UPC bar code from the box, the printout about the special offer, and the receipt from amazon that came from the box.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and will buy from Chicago cutlery again, if not the same set.

Was on super sale at a local retailer. Couldn't resist the fame of the name for the price. Avoid the dishwasher, clean and dry, treat kindly, and they will perform fine and you won't complain like some of the others. What do you expect for the price, a high end item? The hardwood handles look more classy than plastic. Not a 5 star product, but a 5 star value for the budget minded.
