 "Exceeds Expectations" 2009-03-17
By R. Morehouse (Castro Valley, CA)
We have been collecting Henckel knives over the years and our old and tired storage block needed replacing. The Henckel block is a beautiful beechwood color and very classy. In addition, it holds 22 knives including a slot for a pair of scissors and a sharpening steel. We are very pleased with our new purchase.

 "Nice block...awkward steak knife positioning...but classy!" 2009-01-18
By S. Costello (Buffalo, NY)
This is nice block...a little large for a small counter...but finally a block that isn't that typical dark (oaky looking) wood grain. This one is much lighter in color and looks classier than all the others I have tried or that came with any set of Henckle knives I bought.

The only thing I DO NOT LIKE about this product is that the steak knives rest sideways, not up and down like every other knife block I've seen. This is VERY annoying for someone like me who is anal retentive and wants symmetry and alignment wherever I look. Sometimes the steak knives rest in the slot kind of crooked and it bugs me to no end. I'm always straightening the knives out when I walk by. And some of the slots are too big for the smaller knives and those rest sideways too...so they wind up slightly cockeyed in the slots. Why the slots aren't cut up and down instead of sideways...I don't know. Oh well...but other than that it's a nice block that doesn't look cheap and DOES NOT LOOK LIKE OAK!!!! FINALLY!

It is also a tad expensive...I mean it's just a block of wood!

 "Really like this!" 2008-12-25

Got one of these for Christmas - nice and solid, holds all of my knives, even the 12" scimitar-bladed one that I use for big cuts of meat.

 "Henckel's Knife block" 2008-12-18
By Frank Panico Jr.
This block has enough slots to accomadate many of your Henckels knives(depending on how many you have).

I wish it did not cost $30 more, for the few extra slots I needed, but it holds all my knives, so I am satisfied with it.

 "Great-Looking Knife Block!" 2009-04-07
By R. D. Collins (Hermosa Beach, CA United States)
I'm very happy with this knife block. It's very well made, sturdy, and great looking. I especially like that all the slots (except the 6 steak knife slots in the very front) are horizontal, which is easier on the edges.

I have more than a dozen kitchen knives, including a very large 270mm Hattori Gyuto, a 240mm Hattori Gyuto, a 170mm Hattori Santoku, an 8-inch and a 6-inch Wusthof Chef's Knife, a Dexter Russell Chinese Cleaver, a 150mm and a 135mm Hattori Petty knife, two Wusthof paring knives, and a 9" Wusthof Bread Knife, plus six Laguiole steak knives. All are in the block, along with my ceramic sharpening rod and a pair of Kershaw Shears.

The slots were wide enough for all of my knives except one. After filling all the other slots, I had one knife left over, the Wusthof 6-inch Chef's Knife. It's 1-9/16 inches wide at the hilt, but the last remaining slot was only 1-1/2 inches wide. That problems was very easily resolved with a keyhole saw, which I used to slightly widen the top portion of the slot until my knife fit in it. Since the actual cut is entirely within the slot, there's no visible damage.

A great block for the money, and a great way to store your good kitchen cutlery!

"Nice block but slots too narrow" 2009-03-04
By Peter Hinman (Ann Arbor, MI)
I recently bought a Kramer knife that is 2 3/8" wide at the handle. I was hoping, partly based on the reviews, that this block would accommodate it -- in addition to my cleaver. No such luck -- the slots other than the cleaver slot are only about 2 1/8" wide. If your knives fit in this dimension, it's a very nice block, but I wish the descriptions would give the slot widths.

"Have a lot of knives? This is the one for you!" 2009-01-30
By Susan R. Masterson
I recently added two new Santoku knives to my collection and needed a bigger knife block. I'm SO glad I picked this one! This block will hold 5 very large knives (4 santokus + 1 cleaver) plus a mess of smaller knives. I love it!

"Better than Henckels Twin 22 slot" 2008-11-15
By L. Arthur (Denver, CO)
I couldn't decide if this block or the Henckels 22 slot would hold my 2 long 11" Victorinox bread knives, 2 Wusthoff Santokus, and 2 small Chicago Cutlery Santokus plus a couple other knives. I ordered them both and compared them side by side. The back corner of the Henckels is "blocked" so it sits 1" closer to the back wall on the counter than this block. However, I found the Shun bamboo wood block more aesthetically appealing and a nicer finish than the Henckels block. Also, the BIG difference is in the width of the knife slots. This block consistently for just about all slots was wider by 1/8" to 1/4" than the Henckels. For me, this small increase in width made the difference in getting all my knives in the block or not. If you have serious knives, then most of them are probably wide, and need this block. If your knives are narrow then the Henckels block would work fine. Both blocks were identical heighth. The steak knives are stored in a horizontal orientation in the Henckels block compared with this block. The large cleaver slot is towards the bottom of the face with this one, and towards the top of the block with the henckels block. As an added bonus, the 4 slots across the bottom on the Shun block are slightly wider than the Henckels block and therefore can accomodate a knife a little larger than a pairing or steak knife. The Henckels block has the same size slots along the bottom as used in the bottom section for steak knives. The opening for kitchen shears is the exact same width in both blocks, however, the heighth of the opening is less in this block as compared with the Henckels block and fits my cheap shears from Walmart better than the Henckels block did although both worked fine. As far as packaging is concerned, the Shun block is packaged better than the Henckels block. Both blocks have identical rubber feet on the bottom (screwed into the block). I assume both are made in China, (the Henckels is for sure). The Shun block is more expensive here on Amazon but worked better for my knife collection.

 "excellent product" 2008-08-09
By Joan Gordon (Norwich, CT)
The product, the Shun22 slot knife block is superb. I do have to be careful entering the knife into the appropriate slot so as not to nick the surface of the bamboo finish. The even darker than expected color of my unit is most handsome. I think the slot numbers are perfect because any more onenings for smaller knives would be superfluous. It has been admired by friends.
