Seki Magoroku are traditional Japanese knives which have been manufactured in a similar style or centuries.. There are now some European shapes to complement this line. This series catches the eye with its mirror-finished edge of high-quality steel, featuring Molybdenum/vanadium stainless steel blade with a hardness of 58 HRC. The handles feature a rich Bubinga wood handle in the traditional chestnut-shape. Manufactured in Japan by KAI which for more than 90 years has manufactured cutlery and related products of exceptional function, sharpness, and durability. It's these qualities that presently place products by KAI among the world's best.

"Truly beautiful and practical set" 2008-08-13
By Groch (Broomfield, CO United States)
Over the years I've purchased a lot from Amazon, this knife set is one of my all time favorite buys.

I will not review the individual knives here, but to say that they are beautifully crafted, and very sharp. Check out the reviews on each of the individual knives for owner feedback. Some have European style blades (sharpened on 2 edges) some are Japanese with single edges. All are nicely balanced and made in Japan.

As for the set, consider the assortment. Many 9 piece sets give you an odd assortment of mostly small knives along with cheap scissors, an ugly block, and a throw away steel hone. This set, as the photo shows, has 7 well chosen knives, a beautifully finished bamboo block (the same one in the Shun sets) and a full size whetstone. So far as I can tell, the whetstone (KAI model AP-0305) is not otherwise available in the U.S., but it uses well chosen 400/1000 grit. Equivalent stones sell for about $60 on Amazon.

I have not owned them long enough to report on long term wear, they have wood handles so should be hand washed, but expect them to provide excellent service for many years.

 "Dull and thin blades" 2009-08-21
By lj (PA USA)
Just tried these knives and could not believe the non-quality. I tried to use them and the knives got stuck in middle of an apple and potatoe, had to to back to the using a cheap ten year old set I had, the blades on these knives are thin, bend and extremely dull, dangerous to use dull knives.

"Needs a TEN at this price!" 2008-12-25
By In Memory of W. G. Simms (Palmetto Piedmont, USA)
We have some very nice knives made by Henckel and Shun and these KitchenAid knives approach the quality of those with a much more modest price point.

For instance...

Our friends have a daughter who recently graduated from university and will be setting up her own place. With the budget we allocate for such events we had no idea that we could make the kind of contribution to her future household that we did with this set.

Indeed, the price we paid at KOHLS in the winter of 2008 was too low to mention without embarrassment and this set would have been worth four times that.

BOTTOM LINE: If you find this set at $100 or less jump on it.

PRO:

1. Price

2. Quality

3. Completeness

4. Curb appeal - looks good!

CON:

1. Block wasn't well-finished; steak knife slots needed enlarging so the knives would fit on the one we bought.

2. Honing steel is too short; this set comes with an 8 inch honing steel and a 10 or 12 is more appropriate for most.

 "GREAT SET OF KNIVES" 2008-11-19
By Mary L. Rogers (Oroville, CA)
I love this set of knives. My grandson commented on what nice knives they are and told his wife maybe they should look into getting a set as they needed some good knives. So I got them a set for Christmas. You really can't go wrong with Kitchen Aid.

"Where do you put the 'bonus' knife????" 2008-11-04
By trail girl (New Hampshire)
I like the knife set just fine; the only thing that bugs me is that there's no slot for the bonus knife, so it tends to just sit out on my counter. :)

 "Quality product" 2008-10-01
By Drew Odette (Portland, or)
I have always been impressed with rubbermaid and kitchenaid products. They are sturdy, affordable, stylish and reliable. This product is all of those things. They aren't the type of product where you jump out of your shoes saying "wow I had no idea knives could be that great!", but they are a fantastically high value product in many respects.

 "Slots too small" 2007-02-06
By A. Kellman (New York, NY)
We got this block to fit our knives, but were unhappy to find that the medium sized slots did not fit our medium sized knives. Our large chef knife fit in the large slot, though our medium knives were too large. Amazon and/or Mundial should give better descriptions. We ended going with a Henkels block that did fit all of our knives.

 "great knife block" 2008-11-24
By E. Sigman
This knife block is great! I purchased it to replace another knife block that did not accommodate my fatter handled J.A. Henkels knives. I would recommend this product!

 "High quality, great price!" 2008-05-10
By Karin (Wisconsin)
I looked at many knife blocks, and this one would hold all of my knives, and had a great look at a great price. Unlike some of the other reviewers, all of my knives fit great! The price can't be beat for how good the quality is.

"Mundial Knife Holder only fits mundial" 2008-02-26
By A. Paolella (Boston MA)
We tried to buy other blocks to hold our mundial steak knives and none fit. So we had to get the Mundial brand. I love it, it is very large and holds a ton of knives.

If you dont have alot of counter space, wait until you get a new house. If you are thinking of getting a knock off block for your Mundial's dont bother, they dont work.

"Excellent product to hold all your kitchen knives!" 2008-02-17
By Teresa Sibaja (Mishawaka, IN USA)
I love this storage block! I combined three knife blocks into one with this huge beautiful block. If you are a kitchen fanatic as I am I would highly recommend.

"Low quality, not worth the price" 2008-02-09
By Thistle (The Desert Southwest, USA)
I have quite a collection of Wusthof knives which would not all fit in the block I had, and some were stored in drawers making it inconvenient so I purchased this knife block because it has 23 slots and I thought that would solve my knife storage situation.

When I opened the box I was not pleased that the block was not wrapped properly and somewhere during shipping it had received a nasty blow to the edge leaving a dent and splinters.

After contacting Amazon a replacement was sent out, and yes, the same situation, it also arrived damaged.

Before sending the second one back I decided to see how well the knives would fit in the block and again I was disappointed. Most notably, the clever slot was not wide enough to accommodate, as was the case with most of the slots. In addition, the edges of the slots were poorly done and had very rough edges. The block itself had a nice finish but overall it appeared to be a low quality block.

I sent both blocks back then purchased a 25 slot block by Wusthof. The price was much higher but so is the quality. It has a lovely finish, smooth edges and everything including the clever fits beautifully.

I would not recommend the Mundial KB-23 block, especially if your knives are by Wusthof
