 "These are awesome!" 2009-04-05
By krbtv (Fort Worth, TX)
I bought this set based on the positive reviews and I am so glad that I did. The knives (metal part) are wider than my Santokus from another brand. These cut extremely well and are well constructed. I will update my review after I have tried them for a while.

You might want a small pairing knife in addition to these knives. Other than that, these knives will do just about anything you need to do. You should definitely buy these!

Review update May 12, 2009:

The knives don't appear to keep a sharp edge after using for a week. I am still happy with them. They feel right when I'm cutting.

 "great knives, worth it..." 2008-07-01
By S. Bhakta (ATX)
rec'd a Wusthof set as a house warming gift and loved them until...i came across these bad boys. i had always wanted a Santoku knife and debated the purchase of 4 (but for the price ~$25 @ Sams, it was totally worth it). These knifes are great, i use them for the more difficult food items like meat (cuts through it like butta'). i have had my knives for over a year and haven't had to sharpen them yet. i have placed them in the dishwasher (without the heat cycle dryer on) and they were fine, but i generally hand wash them and let them air dry (no problems). they came with a very nice wooden block, but i have placed them on my magnetic knife strip (right next to my semi-retired Wusthof knife set). i find myself reaching for these knives time and again. the benefit of having 4 knives is that if one has been used, there is another to take its place.

great set, nice weight, very sharp, and full tang. if you have been debating on purchasing a Santoku knife to add to your collection, then do yourself a favor and purchase these (head over to Sams or buy them here!)

 "Excellent value" 2008-04-25

These are actually high carbon stainless steel so they should not rust as the previous reviewer claimed. Can't beat these knives for the price... just go mine at Sam's Club for $22.

"Great value for functional knives" 2007-02-06
By E. J Tastad (Marion, IA United States)
Pros:

High carbon steel holds a much sharper edge longer than stainless steel

Functions almost as well as my Wusthof Classic santoku for far less money, and if I break one of these, who cares?

Cons:

Fit and finish isn't great, there are visible imperfections in the polish of the blade and fit of the handles. Knives weren't uniformly sharp from the factory.

Does a person really need 4 santoku knives?

Bottom Line: These are a great value for the dollar if you don't mind carbon steel (these will stain/rust), and you know how to sharpen a knife.

These are a great knife for the dollar. Yes, they need regular sharpening (all worthwhile knives do), and they will stain, especially if you put them in the dishwasher. These knives function, and that is what a knife is supposed to do. Too many people buy stain free knives so they look pretty, but all but the most expensive don't hold an edge. I have a set of Henckels International (cheapest stainless steel set), that are useless next to these, even though the set was twice as much new. I like that these are high-carbon steel and take an excellent edge (the factory edge was terrible on mine). With the Spyderco Tri Angle Sharpmaker I was able to make these razor sharp in just a few minutes.

I would of course recommend a Wusthof Classic over one of these, but the entire set of these cost half as much as a single Wusthof classic, and these take almost as good of an edge. I do have my Wusthof classic, but I use these for the dirty work. The only reason I bought these was that I got a great deal on them at the local warehouse club, so I paid about 1 fourth that of the Wusthof. Just remember to sharpen these right away, and then hone them on your steel regularly to maintain a nice sharp edge.

"Henckels Twin "Select" - NOT" 2008-12-18
By PSach (South)
I purchased this 7 pc Twin Select set when it was on Amazon for $299 thinking what a deal. When they arrived the knives were "dirty" and some had scratches. They were new - just grimy in an industrial sort of manner. Also, the handles have an ugly seam between the handle and the bolster? It totally destroys the smooth look.

The block was more poorly finished than knife sets that I have seen for a fraction of the price. Even at $299 these are ugly and heavy. I never used them so I can't comment on that aspect. Needless to say I returned them to Amazon and rec'vd. a full refund due to Amazon's excellent customer service.

"The best balanced knives around" 2004-02-08
By T. Newbold (Lago Bertrand, Patagonia, Chile)
These knives feel so natural in your hand that you might as well be Wolverine from the X-men (OK, they feel supernatural). Each of the knives is very sharp, holds an edge brilliantly, and is a pleasure to hold in your hand. The brushed stainless finish of the handles is really handsome and would fit in any kitchen. The knives are a real pleasure to use.

I bought this set about 6 months ago and it was sharp and well balanced. Recently I notice that the blade was chipping off and started to get dull, I don't know if this is a flaw or time to get it resharpened. I took very good care of it and never put it in the dishwasher. Overall its a good knife that probably needs sharping done on it every 6 months.

I orginally purchased the Twin Star Plus but it was a real disappointment. Would not stay sharp and kept returning them-finally had enough and went for the Twin Select. Best choice-the best knifes we have ever owned! Worth every penney we spent! They do an incredible job and feel perfect in your hand. The Henckel Company truly stands behind their product and only want their cutomers to be happy. It's such a pleasure to have good knifes that do a beautiful job - you will never be disappointed with this choice. From a very satisfied customer !!

"Perfect for people who want too many knives" 2001-08-16
By Michael J Edelman (Huntington Woods, MI USA)
Five stars for quality- and one for the concept.

One of the centerpieces of any real show-off kicthen is the knife block stuffed with gleaming stainless German knives, one for every conceivable purpose. And they all shine like the day they were purchased, because few, if any, of them ever get used.

How many knives do you really need? For most cooks it's one. Maybe two. A good chef's knife can do everything from slicing a roast to making radish flowers and everything in between. Add an inexpensive serrated knife for bread and tough-skinned vegetables, and you're on an equal footing with any professional chef. If you clean your own fish (which is unlikely, unless you also catch them), you need a filleting knife. And that's it.

So really, most of us need two knives. This set gives us five, plus a block and a sharpening steel. But for a fifth the cost, you cna buy a really nice chef's knife- with a 10" blade, rather than the 8" found in this set- as well as a serrated knife and a steel, and still have enough left over for a copy of How To Cook Everything and enough groceries to make a nice dinner.

The Wusthof Grand Prix2 8 piece block set comes with a wide variety of useful knives. The set includes a 3.5" parer for peeling and paring, a 4.5" utility for small slicing jobs, a 6" sandwich knife for slicing and carving, a 8" Cooks for chopping and dicing, a 8" bread knife for cutting those crusty loaves of bread. Also included are Come Apart kitchen shears for triming herbs or a variety of other house hold chores, a 17 slot block to store your Grand Prix2 knives and a honing steel to keep you knives sharp and ready to use. Wusthof Grand Prix2 knives are made in "The Cutlery Capital of the World", Solingen Germany. Each manufacturing step is performed to exacting standards by skilled German workers aided by the most modern, computer guided equipment. Some of our precise steps are done robotically and utilize the same machinery that are used to produce very well known Swiss Watches. It is this balance of German technology and old world hand craftsmanship that is the secret of how each WÜSTHOF knife is created. Known the world-over for it’s unique and uncompromising quality, Wusthof uses a special blend of German steel through out the whole length of the knife. The ingredients of this steel are proudly etched on each blade. Wusthof not only uses the best materials to make a fine knife, but it is also crucial that each blade is precisely tempered. This tempering allows the knife to hold its edge for an extremely long time, yet still be able to be maintained in your home kitchen with out the need to be sent away for maintenance. Our unique compound angle is not seen in many knives. This angle tapers from the spine of the knife to the edge to allow for a sturdy, yet extremely sharp edge while it also tapers from the bolster to the tip to give the knife strength as well as flexibility.

 "Excellent Value" 2009-08-11

I am not the prince of France nor a professional cook, as the earlier reviewer claims to be. I am an IT professional who likes to cook for my husband and friends and family on the weekends. Since I'm not a member of the French royal family (is there such a thing anymore?) and a mere humble, midwestern lass of various Euro-American decents (a "mutt"), I must carefully stock my kitchen with the best items I can afford. In short, I HATE buying things twice. That's why I buy Wusthof knives. I already owned a Classic 8" cooks knife, a paring knife, and 6 steak knives from Wusthof. I bought the Classic knifes like 15 years ago, when I was much younger and didn't care for my knives as well as I do now. Fortunately, I bought quality back then, and with a little honing and some sharpening, my older knives are working like new again. Every tool in my kitchen should be this durable and forgiving.

This Grand Prix 2 is a nice addition to what I already had. These are a comfortable weight and well-balanced. The Grand Prix 2 knives are a wee-bit lighter in weight than the Classic knives, but that's ok with me. My husband prefers the weight of the Classic series and I prefer the weight of the Grand Prix 2 knives. Life is good.

There are a couple of knives that aren't included in this collection that I still plan to buy. Fortunately, my block has a couple of slots left open. I really want a Santoku knife. This would make my collection complete.

FYI... as of this writing the amazon.com price is $[...]. I actually bought this set from another website (a MAJOR U.S. retailer) and paid $[...]. Either price is a great deal (but I really liked saving the [...] bucks... sorry amazon).

You are looking at the finest set of knives on the planet Earth. No kidding. The finest steel and no expense spared. The highly respected Consumers Reports rates it above the Henkel Pro and I must agree.

You see I am a professional chef (30+ years) and these are the tools of my trade. On top of that they are a fantastic bargain when weighing price to quality.

Buy only if you want the best. There are plenty of others out there that will suffice if this is not a priority for you. Personally I feel like a surgeon when I have these fine tools in my hands.

I am not happy with my knife block set. I got it as a Christmas gift and the large knife already has a 1 1/2 inch crack in it. Also, they are not very sharp to begin with. You have to find a good sharpener for them. If I were you, I would find a better quality knife set

 "AWESOME KNIVES" 2006-11-28
By P.E.I. (Los Angeles, CA)
Even though I preferred the look of the Pro S series, I went with the 5 star because it's so easy to hold. I love the ergonomic grip and how the knives feel perfectly balanced in your hands. I've owned the set for 3+ years and have not experienced any rusting or discoloration.

IMO, it's very low-life of the Cutco rep to bring down the ratings of their competitor's products. Don't listen to their non-sense. The Henkels 5 Star is a superior and high quality set.

"Why are they looking rusty?" 2004-10-31
By S. Haus
I registered for these as a wedding gift, and received the 9 pc set. They are really nice, but within 6 months, there were little orange spots on the blades. 2 years later, I cringe everytime I look at them, thinking how expensive they were and how I hate how they look. I thought they were supposed to be rust proof. I've NEVER put them in the dishwasher. I don't know why they are like this. Maybe we have hard water? I asked the Williams Sonoma sales person 6 months after my wedding, and he said they should not be doing that. (I noticed WS no longer carries the line now, I wonder why.) Has anyone else had this problem?

"Handles may be scratched and discolored" 2004-02-04
By
I purchased the 5 piece set which is a nice combination. However, the handles were marred and discolored. I sent them back and got another set with the same problem. I have since visited many retail stores and seen the same problem. I contacted Henkels and they told me that they were aware of the problem and to try rubbing some oil on them. I did which darken them up but did nothing to the scratches.
The blades are excellent, however the 5-star handles have issues. Just check them out carefully before you buy.

"How many Cutco(s) in use in professional kitchens" 2004-01-30
By
Just a word... ask a chef (one who wears whites and checkered pants 15 hours a day and smells of fish and garlic) How many Cutco knives are in their kitchens.

If you're using a knife 8 hours a day, trust me... your cutco knife will be relegated to the trash can or cutting boxes.

 "Test before you buy" 2003-12-11
By
I have one Henckels Five Star knife (5 inch blade approximately, cost about 70$), and a set of Cutco. Both are pretty good, but I'd go with the cutco, as the Henckels gets dull pretty quickly when it contacts either a plate or cutting board, and the handle is definitely not dishwasher friendly, it gets marred quite readily. As for balance, both are balanced pretty well, but the handle of Cutco feels better. Cutco is expensive, and so is Henckels, so be smart when you buy, and try to get the most free stuff you can from the Cutco rep if you choose to go that route. The warranty for Cutco is definitely better than Henckels, which basically has no warranty. Hope this was helpful.

I ordered this set and was very excited because the price was very low compared to stores. It looks very nice and elegant and cuts very well. I love the serrated blades for tomatoes and onions which I chop a lot.

I used it for cutting chicken with bones - the handle becomes a little slippery when its held with wet hands. But I like the way it cuts.

On the whole good price and value and free shipping is the best.

This is overall a nice set of knives, good weight and they don't bend too much. The price is the selling point here, Henckels International means "made in China or Taiwan" not Germany but overall it is a nice set. If you are the person who wants the German name this is not for you but if you want a knife that is sharp and ready to use every day, give them a try.
