"Not so hot.. You can do better for the same price" 2008-11-01
By Benjamin Holt
I bought these knives when the set was on special for $60 instead of the usual $100. While they look great, the pros of this knife set end about there.

They don't hold their sharpness very long and require constant sharpening to maintain a useable edge. That in itself is a rather minor complaint, but it gets much worse. These knives rust VERY easily. If you leave them in the sink for even a day, rust spots will appear. Normally this isn't a problem since you can just clean it off, but where the rust appears, the metal quickly weakens. In less than 8 months I've had 3 of the steak knives acquire CRACKS in the metal at the base, and one of the cutting knives chipped off a 3mm area of the cutting blade while being sharpened.

The only reason I've given this set 3 stars is because Chicago, after much argument, was willing to send me replacement knives at no cost. Otherwise, this set would be a flat 1.

Long story short, for $100, way not worth it.. you can do far better for the same price with other higher rated sets on Amazon. For $50 this set would be worth it.

 "Rusting!" 2008-04-24
By OS (Silver Spring, MD)
I bought this set from Bed Bath and Beyond. We used several knives, hand washed them and let them dry overnight on a rack in the sink. One knife had a large rusty stain on it in the next morning! My wife and I could not believe it. It would not happen even to one of our dollar store knives! So much for the steel made in China! We were able to return the set and bought Henckels from Amazon and have been satisfied with them. I made sure, the set is made of German steel in Germany.

"Incredible Knives for the Price" 2007-02-01
By J. Vallager
First off, I've worked in kitchens for about eight years. All high end restaurants, so I understand what makes for high quality cutlery. For work I have a set of Wusthof Triton blades, you won't find many better knives than that. But at home I have this Insignia set because I would never trust my roommate or girlfriend with a $150 Wusthof knife. Having this set has paid off immensely.

I always wash a knife by hand, just common sense. True their stainless steel, but stainless can still rust. Some of these knives have unfortunately been through the dishwasher a couple of times and have come out just fine; I have never had any problem with rust.

The balance of these knives is superb. And the quality of the steel is very good. These knives will keep a sharp edge for weeks, and I use them daily.

People complain that they're not that sharp, but what they don't realize is you can't just run the steel over them to hone them. You have to keep the knife at low angle and maintain that with every stroke. If you know how to hone a knife, these will come very close to a brand new professional blade.

I would easily recommend these knives to anyone looking to spend $100 to $200 for a set. I have seen much cheaper quality sets for more money. This definitely is a great buy for the money.

 "Ok, but not great" 2007-01-05
By V. Lea (Hawkeye Land)
I know others had problems with rust spots - I haven't had ANY issues like that. I think if you hand wash after use you will be fine. They definitely aren't for the dishwasher.

My only complaint is that they arrived dull. Yes, there is a sharpener, I received two in fact, but still, having to sharpen all the knives (not the steak ones obviously) took a bit of the newness out of the situation, and made it work.

Otherwise, they are great, and after a lot of time spent for the initial sharpen I haven't had a problem. They are nicely balanced, and look very nice on my countertop.

"ANALON 15 PIECE CUTLERY SET" 2008-10-30
By E. Rozzi
To soon to evaluate the sharpness of the knives in the set. But what I would like to mention is how disappointed I was after receiving the set, that it looked incomplete, in that, there is an empty slot but no tool to go inside of it. I thought I was missing a piece. I contacted Analon who said that's the way it comes. I asked if I could purchase an additional piece to fill the slot. They only sell sets and not individual pieces.

I spent a great deal of money for this set and I am not satisfied with what I received. It was a wedding gift and I feel quite embarrassed about the incomplete look of the set.

 "Ginsu knives" 2009-09-08
By R. Mosley (Little Rock, AR)
The knives are attractive and sharp with a substantial feeling in terms of weight. We have noticed a couple of spots on one of them that look like rust. It won't wash off or wipe off. It doesn't affect the utility of the knife...more cosmetic. We will be watching as time goes on to see if other spots appear or these get worse. Thus our "they're OK" rating for the time being.

 "Cutlery Block" 2009-01-23
By D. Vuong
I ordered it on December 13th and I received it December 23rd with the Free Shipping. I needed a daily use block set because I love to cook and I wanted a eye-appealing since it was going to be sitting on the counter of my kitchen. The Block was nicely built and had a in-block sharpener which is fantastic. Each knife was sharp and felt heavy in the hand, which made it feel more stable. They were stainless steel and had a aerodynamic design which was very eye-pleasing especially in my stainless steel kitchen. The steak knives were not serrated, but cut easily into meat. The cheese set and mezzaluna were great bonuses along with the block set. They are not made with the same quality as the knife set so don't expect it. The cheese set is nice with wooden handles, and the mezzaluna is very sharp with plastic handle.

With the Omaha Steak Offer. As I recall it was a 3-Option deal. They would have either a chicken and burgers option, an steak and dessert option, or chicken and fish option. Don't quote me on that, it's just from memory. I found the offer under Special Offers on the page, but I'm sure you could search for it on amazon's website. You would need the UPC bar code from the box, the printout about the special offer, and the receipt from amazon that came from the box.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase and will buy from Chicago cutlery again, if not the same set.

I bought this knife set to replace a cheap set we received as a wedding gift 16 years ago. This set makes the old one look like a toy. The construction of the knives is very solid, from the metal handles to the blades. They cut wonderfully. With the ladles, extra knives, and such this set is also quite a bargain.

By Daniel C. Clark
I have a whole set of Global knives. This holder looks great and is very functional. I am not a fan of wooden blocks. Most non-wooden blocks do not hold knives in a way as to not hurt the blade. This knife block allows the knives to sit in their slots without ever touching the blade. It has thick holes for the forged knives and thin ones for the stamped knives. It also has a hole for your sharpener.

 "beautiful knife set" 2009-07-16
By Me and My House
These nice heavy steak knives are full tang and riveted, the wood box is nice, and best of all they cut great. We've only used them a couple of times so far, so I'm not positive about how well they'll hold up, but they seem to be well made and so far we really like them. HUGE improvement on the old, cheap, flimsy steak knives we had.

"Higher quality than I would have expected" 2009-07-16
By Pen Name (Fairbanks, Alaska)
I've owned many sets of steak knives, and it is hard to find a good quality set that I will stick with. I've never heard of Pinzon, but I can say these knives stack up very well against my J.A. Henckels International Eversharp 8-Piece Steak Knife Set that I've been using for the last year.

I received the Contemporary set. The quality is very well made. These are full-tang, which means that the tang of the blade (the part that extends past the handle), goes all the way through the length of the grip. That way you don't have to worry about the blade snapping off the handle. Most decent steak knife sets are full-tang anyway, so that's not really a big deal and I would expect it. The three rivets in the handle are completely flush with the handle, and appear to be very firmly set. If you run your finger over the grip you can not feel the rivets at all. The area where the blade meets the grip is also flush and there is no obvious separation between the two pieces. They're also stainless steel so you don't have to worry about them rusting, although I wouldn't recommend putting them in the dishwasher. I did take one of the knives and banged it up with a hammer several times and tried to bend the blade. The blade did not bend at all, and the rivets and handle stayed intact and did not separate from the tang (although it did get marred up and take some dents).

Upon receiving the knives my biggest concern with them was the blade, which didn't look very sharp. The blade is indeed fairly sharp, and performed just as well as my Henckels. Lastly, the storage box they come in is fairly nice. It is wood with a very smooth flat finish and a velvet inlay, however you can't tell it is plastic unless you look closely. IE, it does not look cheap. I would definitely consider getting these as a gift for someone just because the presentation in the box makes them look so nice.

"Good solid set of steak knives" 2009-06-25
By Bob Sacamano (Atlanta, GA United States)
These knives come in an attractive box and are forged, so they should stay sharp a long time. It is easier to cut with a serrated edge knife, but a very sharp non-serrated edge makes a cleaner cut. It is terribly difficult to keep steak knives sharp in my home, so this is a happy compromise. For the price I don't have to worry about them not being cared by everyone. The handles are riveted for long life. They look very nice as well.

Customer Buzz
"Nice knives given the price point" 2009-06-25
By Sean P. Logue (Research Triangle Park, NC USA)
These are a set of nicely balanced steak knives in an attractive presentation box.

The knives are full tang (the metal of the blade goes all the way to the end of the handle), and have a nice matte finish on the handles. They look very similar to expensive German knives, but of course are not the same level of quality. If they were, they would be five times the price. However, for a nice set of steak knives, they really do the trick.

Very nice for the price!

"Sharp and to the point" 2009-06-08
By E. Schechter (West Chester, PA United States)
I like these knives quite a lot. They are sharp, and they have an edge that is not only scalloped, but closely serrated as well, and so they promise to keep their edge for some years. They might as well, because there is no way on earth that I would know to sharpen them. They might be honed a bit on the lowest setting of the Chef's Choice sharpener, but not really re-sharpened. But anyway, they should be good for years at the table before descending into the household task category; their ends have points, and they cut meat very neatly and efficiently.

Whenever I get something that looks reasonably sturdy but says it should not be put in the dishwasher, my first response is, "Oh, yeah?" and into the dishwasher it goes. Some things really should be hand washed to preserve their appearance; don't use the dishwasher on your hard-anodized aluminum cookware unless you want to end up with an aluminum pot that looks exactly like an aluminum pot (still works, though). If you have any old carbon-steel knives, they will rust if they sit in the dishwasher, but the newer ones will survive unscathed. I do always put the good knives lying singly in the top rack, so they won't be jostled by the other cutlery, being harmed or doing harm.

These knives come out of the dishwasher in fine shape. I had a bit of water spotting, which alerted me to my being out of rinse agent, but the spots wiped right off with a damp paper towel; and with the rinse agent in place, they washed beautifully. I think that sometimes the manufacturers think that if they recommend hand washing, it makes the product sound more elegant and somehow precious and deserving of special care. Maybe things that must be carefully hand washed seem worthy of a higher price. To me, it only makes them seem like work.

The box the knives come in is neat and clean-looking; the set would make a wonderful and good-looking gift for anyone setting up a household. Just as an aside, I remember that when I was a child I was told by an ancient aunt of the lavender variety that one should never give knives as a gift without being paid for them--I believe that a nickel was the amount she recommended. She repeated a superstition that the knives would sunder the friendship otherwise. I pass this on as a bit of tradition that I have never observed, but who can tell when someone might find a bit of folklore a handy thing to know?
