"Thank god for powerful magnets!" 2009-09-24
By BodyART
I'm sold on this concept. I bought this product recently to take care of a growing problem in my kitchen. I'm starting to gather an odd mix of cooking blades that defy the opening sizes of your typical knife block. :) All my favorite blades won't fit in one block, and I refuse to let them rattle around in a drawer! So I opted for the magnetic solution. This 20" strip is just big enough for my current assortment of blades, and holds on to them firmly. :) to be safe, I mounted it underneath my wall mounted pots and pans rack, out of easy falling and impaling range while I'm at the stove or counter. :P

I also have limited space in my kitchen. I don't have a small kitchen, but I do have limited counter space. I'm in the process of trying to free up the available space I do have, without resorting to drastic(expensive) measures like putting in a new counter. mounting stuff on the wall or on the insides of cabinet doors = win/win situation. :)

"One of the best things I ever bought for my kitchen AND garage." 2009-08-22
By Book Lover (Illinois)
I bought 2 of these and have one in my kitchen for my knives and one in the garage for my tools. It holds all my screw drivers, pliers, wrenches, a huge hammer and various other tools. It's so convenient to just grab a tool off the magnet and use it. It also magnetizes the screw drivers which helps hold the screws to the driver! That's just an added plus, IMO. For the kitchen...there's no better way to store your knives. Talk about convenient! I also get compliments galore when people see it. They love my knife magnet and my spice jar magnets that are on the side of my fridge....they're very handy to grab when cooking. It holds all of my knives, 2 pair of kitchen shears and a Craftsman Multi-tool that comes in very handy in the kitchen. :)

If you're thinking about this magnet, BUY IT. You will LOVE it. I got rid of a huge knife block that was taking up counter space. These things are perfect. I'd love to have another one....if only I could find the wall space to hang it. I like the idea of a previous reviewer who hung it VERTICALLY.....great idea! I may be able to find wall space if it's hung that way instead of horizontally. ;)

 "Good magnet, bad hardware" 2009-08-19
By Bradley C. Ross
I'm happy with the magnet. It works well and is sold for a very reasonable price. Plan to purchase hardware to secure it to the wall, though. The needed hardware will only cost a few pennies, but be aware that the included hardware is worthless.

This holds my knives well and has the right amount of magnetism. I installed it vertically and stack my knives up and along the bar. I love it and it keeps a big knife block off my counters.

 "Too many knives" 2009-06-29

This is a great holder. It even holds some of the new knives that have their own plastic sleeves. It takes up quite a bit of space but looks good on the counter and holds soooo many knives. Happy to have it.

"This will make your knives very happy" 2009-04-11
By Viktoria Walker (Southcentral WI, United States)
I'm a serious cook, and I take good care of my knives. I don't have a "set", and definitely have more than the usual number. I was trying to decide whether I needed to weed my collection or buy a second knife block when I found this wonderful invention. I was skeptical that it would hold all my knives, but it does: 4 steak knives, two French knives, two santoku knives, several utility knives, a very long carver, a long bread knife, two paring knives, plus kitchen shears, and they all fit easily. No matter who uses and washes a knife, they can put it back in the block without hunting for an appropriate slot. All my knives are there to use, not getting dull or lost in a drawer, and the Kapoosh looks great besides.

 "Just Wonderful!" 2009-03-09
By J. Heidler (Virginia USA)
This product is perfect. It takes up very little space on our counter top and is fun to use. Why hasn't someone thought of this sooner? It's great for the knives because they are not dulled when taking them out and putting them back in, like they are in the wooden slotted holder. Just a great product all around and it looks great too. I highly recommend it.

"High capacity in a small space" 2009-02-27
By Bryan (Los Angeles)
The Kapoosh block occupies a 12" by 6" oval on our countertop. There are 8 knives in now and room for as many more. The rear compartment will conceal blades up to 3.5" high and 9" long. The forward compartment is smaller. Blades up to 2.5" high and 5" long will be concealed. Knives slide in and out easily. A thick blade, like a small cleaver, may not settle in so well. I would prefer more depth in the forward compartment, but all in all it's a handy block because it's so amenable.

love the idea. However in reality it is a little tight. Getting a chefs knife in there can be difficult if there are already a few knives. Still beats the alternative in my estimation.

 "I love this thing!" 2009-02-04
By NancyH (Houston)
I have tried to create my own out of an old can (didn't work so well). When I saw this, I was SO happy knowing I could get my mix of knives out of the dangerous drawer.

I put a multitude of shapes and sizes - from my very heavy Chinese Chef's Cleaver to my very tiny paring knife to my kitchen scissors. It seemed expensive for my budget, but if I divide the cost into the years I'll enjoy it (for it's looks and usefulness) it's a deal.

 "Good product" 2007-06-14
By Katherine Krauss (Houston, TX)
This is great if you've "grown" your knife assortment from different brands/styles etc... or even if you have all the same brand but are buying it over time and haven't completed it yet. Whatever reason you have a bunch of knives but no knife block. And whatever your assortment of knives this makes it seem "custom fit" to your knives.

I also like the way it is seperated into two compartments so that I can have my most used knives front and center and others I can place towards the back. You aren't limited to the size of precut slots like tradional knife blocks.

The stainless version is a lot harder to find than the wooden one but I'm glad I waited until I located one, I think it looks great.

"Poor Product and Poor Quality, Looks Cool Though" 2009-03-13
By Chin S. Ngo
After reading reviews, I expected a lot from this knife block. What I didn't expect was for the "freedom rods" to chip and break off. Every single time I pull my chef's knife from the block, little bits of black plastic from the freedom rods cling onto it. Furthermore, once in a while, 2 or 3 freedom rods would detach from the block. This happened after a day of having it! I assume it's because my knife is extremely sharp and it cuts the freedom rods. Thus I recommend not wasting your money on this, and go purchase something simple like a magnetic strip or magnetic knife block instead. Either that or just make sure your knives aren't too sharp!

 "I Love This Thing!" 2009-02-16
By NOLA Books & Cooks (North of New Orleans, LA, USA)
I was skeptical - I've always used those massive wooden knife blocks - but I love this!

Even the small size Kapoosh holds 5 knives, and I could fit another if I needed to. It's great after cooking a huge meal: no more trying to remember which knife goes in which slot, and I don't have to worry about ruining a knife edge by putting it in the block incorrectly.

It takes up very little counter space, but is amazingly hefty: no worries that it will topple, even when it's fully loaded.

This is a great product that really lives up to its promise. I keep hoping my big wood block will fall apart so I can buy the larger size of the Kapoosh!

 "JUST PERFECT" 2009-02-02
By Constant Researcher (USA)
I am leaving a review because I count on them heavily myself. I found this to be just what I needed. Someone might say it is small, but check the measurements for yourself and you can decide if it is what you need. Small is exactly what I wanted for my counter space. I am able to fit a large chef's knife, a small and medium paring knife, my shears and two other medium sized knives in it. If you need more than that, then get a larger item. I hope this helps. I also liked that I could get this in black to match my stovetop. I love shopping with Amazon as I have had only good experience with them and the prices are excellent. Enjoy.

 "Knife Block" 2008-03-18
By Edith A. Neikirk
Below is the review I wrote when I first began using this knife block. However, after a few months, the rubber rods inside the block began breaking off, and it became difficult to put the knives in. I ended up tossing it out, and have replaced it with a magnetic strip knife holder attached to the wall. This is working wonderfully. I don't have a lot of prep space on my counter, and this gives me more room.

After 40 years of running a household, I have accumulated a variety of knives that do not match. This knife block is great for holding those I use the most right where I do my slicing and dicing. My only complaint is that the one I purchased is a bit smaller than I thought it would be. I should have gotten the bigger one. But, it works for me!

 "Great idea; not perfect" 2009-08-04
By Bunson Honeydew (White Plains, NY)
My wife and I have been using this for a couple of years. The good news is it is versatile enough to hold a variety of our knives we have picked up on various close-outs over the years. The dishwasher safe "Kapoosh" part is wonderful, but it takes awhile to dry.

We, like others have said, have had issues balancing our long knives (bread knife length) and one chopper (mini-cleaver) doesn't stay in.

Otherwise, this is a welcome addition to our kitchen.

"Kapoosh Is A Brilliant Solution" 2009-05-24

Slotted knife holders always run out of slots of the right size. This problem is avoided with Kapoosh. Furthermore, it can easily be cleaned if needed. We now have one in each of our houses and have bought two more for our adult son's and daughter's kitchens. It would be a great bridal gift, too.

I received the Kapoosh knife holder several weeks ago and I am very pleased with my purchase. I read several reviews stating that they noticed the heavy knives would sink down inbetween the rods. I have not had this problem maybe because I put all my heavy knives on the bottom. I have 13 knives that fit in this block all 5 star henckels and a sheering scissor, all fit with ease! The delivery was fast and complete. One happy and satisfied customer

 "Returned It" 2008-06-29
By A. Robinson (Henderson, NV United States)
I bought this partially as an impulse purchase when replacing some everyday table knives at a local Target. I am a fan of innovative and useful product design. Like many others I've found traditional wood knife blocks kind of limiting when you have a variety of knives from different brands, or more than one of a kind. The versatility this product promised seemed to be a big advance, but in reality, it isn't ready for prime time.

Before taking it out of the box, I Googled for more info and found Amazon reviews. To my surprise Amazon even offered stainless steel models not available at my local Target. You just have to love Amazon for the depth and breadth of their inventory, but I digress.

Most of the Kapoosh reviews seemed to be positive, so I promptly washed it for use. Since the packaging is open on top and encourages shoppers to "Try me!" there was no way I was going to use it right out of the box as the enclosed booklet states. There is no telling what made its way into the rods. Keep in mind that this is supposed to be dishwasher-safe, but something I immediately overlooked was that it's for the top rack only. I have a new deep-tub, dishwasher with adjustable top rack, but it barely fit, and only at the edge of the rack where the rotating arm didn't hit it.

Then there was the drying! The drying cycle didn't make much of a dent. While it felt dry on top and on the edges, I had a strong feeling there was a lot of moisture left between the rod. I took the rod unit and forcefully shook a lot of water out, then placed it upside down on a towel to let it air dry. It took about a week before the rods were dry deep down towards the base and in the center, and I live in the Mojave desert! Had I placed my good knives in there straight from the dishwasher, they'd have been a rusted mess. Despite this major complaint, I would have lived with the washing/drying chore had it worked as well as I had hoped.

First off, as is illustrated in the product photo, some knives will not seat deep enough to completely cover the blade. I thought this was just to illustrate the type of blade in use, but in reality long blades will stick out. I don't have any other knife blocks that this happens with. Having a pre-teen in the house who likes to cook, this is a no-go. I'll hazard a guess that this is a product liability law suit in the making. I also noticed the same thing with a much shorter and wider cleaver. I guess it displaces too many rods to fully recess.

I pulled the rod unit out of the block to see what was going on, and I noticed some of the rods had already begun to bend and fold down. This was also the first time I used the cleaver in it. I also have some steak knives with a partially serrated edge that wouldn't slide in easily. I believe had I continued to use it, the serrations would have begun to saw away at the rods.

Lastly, the wood block used to surround the rods is essentially hollow. It is completely open on the bottom, as is the angled piece at the front of the block. It all appears to be held together with glue rather than an interlocking join like a mortise and tenon or dovetail. With the rods inside, the unit has a substantial heft, but take them out and it feels rather insubstantial. Long term durability would probably be an issue.

I hate to be so long-winded in my review, but after reading several others, both pro and con, I was really torn. After trying it out for a short while, I felt compelled to weigh in. I really like the concept. I really wanted to like this product and considered giving them as gifts to family (including a professional chef) and friends (newlyweds.) Maybe it will work for some others with a set of smaller knives, but even with my modest set, it just wouldn't do the job. I took mine back for a refund, and am glad I didn't make any gift purchases.

I think if the designer worked to improve the product, version 2.0 might actually be worth getting.

Some suggestions:

Increase the depth of the rods so that longer blades recess fully.

Decrease the density of the rods to allow for items like cleavers to be inserted without packing down the rods. If this would cause the knives to slide downward, I'd orient them horizontally. Alternatively, some method to allow for the rods to shift and adjust within the base would help.

Maybe replace the rods with self sealing foam or a design it with a user configurable insert. I don't need to find a new location every time I insert a knife, I just need a block with slots that fit the knives I have.

Beef up the construction of the block.
