"Wish I had seen this Amazon review before buying it off Ebay..." 2008-03-19
By ritzy007 (California)
I made the mistake of believing that the Ginsu 2000 knife set my roommate had in college would be comparable to this set simply because it was also from Ginsu. These knives are dull and flimsy. I never ran them through the dishwasher so despite owning them for 2 years now they have no rust spots. The reason they are rust-free is also because I avoided using them. The only time they came in handy was when I was unpacking boxes that had been taped after moving. Save your money and put it toward purchasing a J.A. Henckels or OxO set. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this absolute joke of a set.

The knives are pretty dull although they do the job. Its a great set for the price. I never used the steak knives with actual steak so I dont know how well they will work with it.

"Cheap junk...you get what you pay for." 2006-07-27
By R. Odar (California)
I bought this set over a more expensive product because I wanted something dishwasher safe. Now here I am just a couple months later with rusting knives and a pair of broken scissors that just fell apart in my hands before I even started to cut. If you dont mind dots of rust on your knives than you cant beat the price. Just make sure you have a quality pair of scissors handy as a backup.

 "Knife block is okay" 2009-01-19
By Moscow Jon (Moscow, ID)
You certainly don't want to purchase this set for the knives, which are very low quality. The kife block is just okay but is unique enough to make it worth while.

"Nice enough knife block, but read reviews & beware!" 2009-01-08
By gailcny
This is almost comical, really. I was looking for a knife block and only a couple of new knives. So after reading all the reviews of this set, and not finding any other knife blocks with this unusual design - except at a much higher price - I decided that I would buy this just for the knife block. Another thing that I thought would be worth keeping, however, was the honing steel. Well, guess what? It doesn't even fit into its little space! The diameter of the slot is just slightly smaller than it needs to be, so the steel sticks up at least 2 inches higher than it should, instead of fitting in all the way up to the handle!! I just had to laugh, since I went into this knowing pretty much what I was getting. It's certainly fixable, but I just had to share this.

I got these knives for my mom for Christmas, and she loves them. I've only used them once over there and think they are well made and comfortable. And the Glass block looks amazing! Beautiful way to show off your Steel.

"Made to look good, not to use" 2007-03-19
By Naomi (Storm) (Texas)
I am very particular about my knives; I hate having other people use them or mistreat them, and I get very protective about things like how they're stored or cleaned and what they're used on. Living in a household with a roommate and her two children, I decided that instead of getting annoyed each time I found my Global or Henckels knives carelessly tossed into the sink, I would purchase a set of cheap knives for the children to use and therefore allow myself to horde my knives without feeling remorse.

I found these Pinzon knives on Amazon and unfortunately when I bought them there were only a couple of reviews, mostly pretty good. I purchased the set and awaited their delivery. Upon their arrival I checked them out, put them inside their little display case and didn't think too much about it.

When I was making dinner one day, I decided to try these knives out just to see what quality they were. The first thing that shocked me was the thickness of the blade. I never really thought I'd ever call a knife fat, but these were exactly that - these were fat knives. The edges were "ok," it was very obvious that they were roughly machine sharpened and not with a very fine grit. Unfortunately the thickness of the metal was actually obstructing the use of the knife - the knife was so thick that the blade could not cut in a downward slice in a straight line - the blade would actually veer off due to the differential thickness between the edge and the spine of the blade. Imagine taking an Idaho potato, putting the chef's knife at dead center, pushing downward and ending up with a diagonal cut which "leaned" right or left instead of going straight down the center - that's what you get with these knives.

If you're planning on doing some serious cooking with these knives, I would highly suggest saving your money and saving up for a single really good knife instead of this collection of really bad knives. Yes, I can say without a doubt that you will get far more use out of a single 8" chef's knife that costs $50-80 than out of this entire set of really bad knives.

If you only do moderate cooking, I would still say stay away from these knives - they are badly made to the point where I could consider them dangerous. You're not going to have the blade go flying off or shatter into a million pieces, but instead, you're getting a knife that will not cut straight, and that's about as dangerous as you can get.

If you're getting a set of knives that you want to look pretty on your counter, hey, this is a great set for that.

 "Great Knives" 2009-02-24

Great knives for a regular user, definitely not chef quality. They hold up very well and do what I need to do. However if you are looking for high quality knives for some serious cutting, you might probably look somewhere else.

 "Cheap Quality!!!" 2007-07-26
By SOSA (USA)
I bought this for $20 thinking what a great deal. How bad can they possibly be? Well the quality when opened looked great-sturdy strong, well constructed. Then I washed some of them, not finishing them all & leaving a few in the sink. Came back a few hours later & the ones in the sink that were wet were with RUSTED specks!!! I could not believe my eyes!!! I tried to wash off the rust with a brillo pad-Not successful. I also used a dishwasher for other ones & they got rusted specks in there as well. Poor quality steel or whatever they used in china!!!

 "Knifes are garabge ...." 2006-04-12
By Winnie Tung (NYC, NY)
I got this on Feb 2004 for $29.99 when i moved in to my new house. For that price, I won't complaint.

The best thing in this set is the scissor and utensil holder.

I threw out all the knifes after one year since they caused accidents since they weren't sharp.

Utensils are ok, won't last (last ~2 yrs), better than 99 cents store's one.

"Cheap set, however worth what i paid..." 2006-01-17
By D. Cobb
I'm a deal hound and I bought these when Amazon dropped the price to like $20. With that in mind they are a great set of knives not to mention all the other goodies that came with it. However as I'm sure other reviews have pointed out, you don't want to wash these in the dish washer or let them sit in water as they will rust. We've been careful with our set and except for a few rust marks they are doing fine and still cut just well. I simply can't find myself spending $200 on a set of knives that won't rust. The extra goodies were nice, though fairly cheap. The plastic wear is a bit flimsy and the measuring cups / spoons are thin, so watch your fingers on the edges.

Especially for what I paid at $20 it's a decent cheap set of knives and if you baby them they will last a few years. If you throw them in the dish washer or let them sit in a sink full of water, they will rust in no time and you'll end up with an empty wooden block.

4 out of 5 as they are obviously of lower quality, but are definitely worth what I paid for them and they will last if you take care of them and keep them away from continuous water contact.
